Software Engineer, Applied AI
Fuel Talent is partnering with an early-stage AI infrastructure company that is building secure platforms for deploying and managing agentic workflows in complex enterprise environments.
Their technology helps organizations operate AI systems with clear security boundaries, governance, and accountability, enabling teams to safely integrate AI into critical business workflows. Backed by strong customer traction and an experienced founding team, they're looking for a Software Engineer to help build the production AI systems at the core of their platform.
This is a foundational engineering hire with the opportunity to shape both the product and technical architecture as the company scales.
What You'll Do
Build Production AI Workflows
Build agentic workflows over enterprise data, with clear rules for what a model can access, what tools it can call, and when human review is required.
Design context and grounding systems that provide models with the right information while maintaining security, permissions, and performance requirements.
Work across backend services, APIs, async workers, data pipelines, internal tools, and customer-facing applications.
Engineer Reliable LLM Systems
Build evaluation frameworks and feedback loops for model behavior and workflow outcomes.
Own tracing and runtime visibility across models, context, tool calls, and generated outputs.
Debug failures using production evidence, including context, traces, logs, tool responses, and user feedback.
Balance quality, latency, cost, and security when designing AI-powered systems.
Build Reusable AI Infrastructure
Create shared primitives for context assembly, grounding, tool orchestration, and reviewable outputs.
Build platform capabilities that can be leveraged across multiple use cases rather than one-off implementations.
Partner closely with founders and engineers to move quickly from prototype to production.
Lead Through Ownership
Take ownership of important product and platform initiatives with minimal direction.
Write clean, maintainable code and create thoughtful abstractions.
Leverage modern AI development tools while maintaining a high bar for engineering quality.
About You
- You've shipped production software and built at least one AI-powered product or workflow used by real users.
- You have strong software engineering fundamentals and are fluent in Python and/or TypeScript.
- You understand enough about ML and LLM systems to make sound engineering decisions around training, evaluation, deployment, and operations.
- You're comfortable operating in ambiguity and enjoy owning problems end-to-end.
Bonus Experience
- Production experience with LLMs, agents, or AI workflows.
- Building evaluation systems and feedback loops.
- Debugging retrieval, grounding, tool-use, or orchestration failures.
- Working with enterprise data and security-sensitive environments.
- Experience in industries where reliability and accuracy are critical.
- Early-stage startup experience with significant ownership and autonomy.
